Review: Insurgent by Veronica Roth

Author: Veronica Roth
Release Date: May 1st 2012
Publisher: HarperCollins

One choice can transform you—or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable—and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth's much-anticipated second book of the dystopian Divergent series is another intoxicating thrill ride of a story, rich with hallmark twists, heartbreaks, romance, and powerful insights about human nature.

It's safe to say that Divergent was THE novel of 2011. It quietly snuck up on me at the time and completely BLEW ME AWAY. So naturally Insurgent has been my most anticipated sequel of 2012. Did it live up to the hype? Not at all.

IT OBLITERATED IT.

Insurgent picks up instantly where Divergent left off, with Tris, Four (Tobias), Marcus, Caleb and Peter having escaped the horrors of the Erudite attack and now seeking refuge in Amity. I'm pleased that we got to explore more of both Amity and Candor this time, but true to Roth-style, they are not always as black and white as they seem in theory. I'm not going to delve too deeply into plot specifics, because it's the surprises that are the most exciting. But Insurgent is the most thrilling, emotionally evocative and addictive (you must have god-like willpower if you can put this down for a SECOND) sequel I have ever had the jaw-popping, eye-bulging, electrifying joy to read.

Tobias and Tris? Favourite. YA Couple. EVER. I want MORE relationships like this in YA. It's secondary to the overall plot, but when it's focused on, it so intimately sweeps you up in the moment. I swear, I've never slowed down so much during the sexy-scenes of a book, just to savour every single word and fully appreciate the emotions both characters are feeling with every heated second. What they have is not puppy love. It's POWERFUL. It could destroy whole worlds with it's quiet intensity. They are magnetic in a way only Veronica Roth can pull off. And even when they're at odds with one another, which they are for quite a lot of the novel, with tension so thick you can taste it, the relationship slows to a simmer, but the desire rages on and every touch, every look shared across a roomful of people or tense conversation filled with longing and frustration, is simply put: f****** brilliant. Their relationship is layered and complicated, nothing is simple, nothing is easy, but every obstacle is so goddamn worth it.

Tris is one remarkable heroine. With all she endured in Divergent, we see a girl carrying a heart full of guilt, regret and raw pain. She lost so much and she incited loss too, the guilt of Will's death plays heavily on her throughout Insurgent. She goes through one heck of an emotional roller coaster, but through it all, even when she falls to the lowest of lows and especially when she doesn't believe she can go on, she does. She keeps fighting, because she is a survivor. She is still Tris. Brave and strong and not without fear, but not without fury and fire too. She's smart and resilient and one of the strongest, most complex and admirable heroines I've seen in YA. Even if at times you might not agree with her decisions, you still cheer her on and not for a minute does she allow you to become disengaged in her story.

Revealed are more sides to Tobias and oh, in the name of all that is holy and Dauntless, I am in love with this boy. He's not without his frustrations, mystery and secrets, but that is what makes him so captivating. It's his flaws that give him intrigue, mixed with a beautiful kindness and exhilarating, sometimes scary side. Four.... Tobias... he is a thrilling specimen. Sometimes I wish Tris was more expressive with him, because you could see in certain moments the pain and sadness he was holding back, but it made for the kind of emotional angst that is torturously delightful. Tobias goes through his own emotional turbulence in the sequel, some of which puts him in a position where he and Tris struggle to stay on the same page, but each has their own reasons, each fueled by the right motivations, and while it's painstakingly messy sometimes, both Tobias and Tris shine as individuals.

New alliances form, old ones shatter. Known faces are shown in an entirely new light; some for the good, some for the worse. I love how Veronica can so expertly shift your perspective on a character. She does it slowly, sprinkling clues, building up to the moment where she lays it all bare and you're left gasping for an oxygen mask. An uprising is well into play and our favourite characters are right in the centre of it. War, deceit, love and pain are crashing upon us and Veronica is not afraid to throw in all she has, leaving you to wonder how she'll recover to do it all again in the next book. I laughed, I gasped, I melted, my heart ran a marathon at dizzying speed and I bit my knuckles so hard I'm surprised I didn't draw blood.

The action is as pulse-pounding as ever, the secrets are more earth-shattering and the suspense will almost kill you. It has all the brutality, intensity and surprise of Divergent, but - and I never thought this possible - it's even better. Insurgent is every bit a worthy successor to the novel that smashed so many favourite lists of 2011. Veronica is an author who deserves to rise to the same kind of fame as Rowling. Yes, I am really going there. Insurgent is THAT good. And I am counting down the SECONDS until the third installment, because with the way she ended things? OMFG. DON'T END. DON'T END. DON'T END. DON'T END. *IS DEAD*

5 MILLION GOLDEN APPLES

  10. BRODIE, YOU SUM UP EVERYTHING ABOUT INSURGENT PERFECTLY. I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING YOU SAID IN THIS REVIEW! YOUR REVIEW like Sarah said, PERFECTION ♥

OH MY GOODNESS, how can the book END THAT WAY?!

I still can't believe I finished Insurgent. INSURGENT is way BEYOND what I expected. I can't believe I actually think it's BETTER than Divergent. I mean, DIVERGENT is AWESOME. SO AWESOME. But INSURGENT? IT'S MIND-BLOWING.

AND OH GOODNESS, TRIS and Four!! Like you said, BEST COUPLE EVER. I've dreaded what's going to happen to them in the second book and WOW, I LOVE IT. Their relationship is so AMAZING. It's not always romantic, happy but it's a strong and fierce relationship.

TOBIAS. GAH, I am finally getting used to that name. FOUR is the best fictional character name ever but the name Tobias is kinda awesome too! ;) TOBIAS!! I love him even more than I was in Divergent.

ONE YEAR UNTIL THE SEQUEL?! NOOOOOOO!!!! Maybe I should not have read Insurgent as soon as I get the copy. Maybe I should have waited. BUT WHO CAN STAND NOT READING THE BOOK WHEN IT ARRIVED ON THE DOORSTEP?

    ONE.

    MORE.

    YEAR.

    FOR.

    THE.

    SEQUEL.

Let's just call it Detergent for now, shall we? (Since there is no title for book #3 yet!) :P

PS: Had to delete my first comment because I'm not making any sense :P So many GRAMMATICAL errors, LOL.

  11. YES! YES! YES! I loved this too and I'm dying to write my review but I'm not allowed until May 1st.

I adored Tris and Tobias in this book and I totally agree with you. Both characters go through so much in this book and really my heart went out to them both. I sometimes like that Tris is so strong but then when Tobias reaches out to her, I would like to see more from her.

Anyway...LOVED IT! And I'm glad you loved it too!! Donna xoxox

  18. OMG!!! OMG!!! I knew you couldn't wait until next week to release this one helluva review!!! ACK!!! Tobias and Tris are not yet my favorite YA couple for now (because I haven't read Insurgent) - my fave YA couple is still Ash and Meghan. But anyway - CRAAAAAAAAAP!!!! - the way you described their relationship makes me wanna fly over to Australia, go to your house, sneak in and half-borrow, half-steal your copy!! UGH!!! Do you realize what you're making me feel right now?? I feel like I'm going to explode with excitement! You know I <3 romance and sexy bits in our novels and I crave this kind of 'POWERFUL' intimate scenes that you're declaring here on your blog.

I love your review Brodie!! But hell - I'm kinda scared about the ending. >_< Nooooo. No death-inducing-endings pleaseeeeeeeee!! And we still have to wait 1 more year for Book 3. That's suicide!!! But I'll still read it anyway.. *sigh*

Awesome review!! (Sorry for the exclamation marks - well, it's partly your fault you know..because you made me excited.) ;)

  20. "In the name of all that is holy and Dauntless, I am in love with this boy." <-- That makes a gazillion bajillion of us x)

Oh my gosh, BRODIE! Tris and Tobias are one of my favourite couples ever too, just from reading the first book, because of everything you mentioned: their relationship is complicated and flawed and brilliant and powerful, and like you, I LOVED how it was second to the plot yet was still completely perfect. That takes genius!

Absolutely AMAZING and AWESOME and FANTASTIC and PERFECT and SWOON-WORTHY (and a million positive adjectives) review, Brodie! <3 This is the first full review for Insurgent I've ever read and I think that every person who has to follow it up is really unlucky -- how can it get better than this?? I'm even more excited! :D

P.S. I think I might come to your review as a thesaurus of awesomeness for future reference. Just so you know ;)

  22. YOUR REVIEW AND I?

Yeah, we just ran off together to get married. I LOVE IT SO MUCH, OMG CAN I FRAME IT ON MY WALL OR MAYBE JUST TURN IT INTO THE WALLPAPER INSTEAD? <3 BRODIEEEEE, GIMME YOUR BRAIN (don't worry, I'm not going to go all zombie on you. I'll put it to veeeery good use ;))

But HOWWWWW does it get better?!?! I was hoping and praying for that (or at least at the same level) because I just want more and more and more and MORE but ahhh! Actually hearing you say it is just so thrilling, you don't even know. I can't WAIT to read this! :D

AND AHHHHHHH OMG OMG OMG. YOU SAID ROWLING. I can't believe you WENT THERE. Coming from YOU that means so much <3

WHERE'S THE DAMN TIME MACHINE WHEN I NEED IT?

    Beaaaaautiful review, Brodie!

I'm so super super super excited to get stuck into this. Better than Divergent? NO WAY! I can't even imagine that right now so I'm sure I'll be very very pleasantly surprised when I begin reading this. Clearing another day for this? HELL YES!

The plot sounds bloody amazing but TOBIAS AND TRIS. OH GOOD LORD. You almost made me pass out the other day. TELL ME THERE ARE MORE OF THOSE!!!!!!!

I'm review writing right now. Thanks for ruining my funk with your awesomeness. *pouts* I need to borrow your brain for a day to get through these and not make them rubbish LOL. FAAAAANTASTIC REVIEW! <3

  24. You've pretty much made me want to read this again damn you Brodie! I do not have TIME especially considering I only read it last week!!! But where to start with your review...Four and Tris...YES. Definitely one of my fave YA couples EVER. It's SO realistic and they compliment each other and work together so well! I want to marry them. Or have them get married. Or something. I am SO in love with Four seriously, ultimate book boyfriend RIGHT there. I'm glad we saw a bit of emotional weakness from Tris in this book, it definitely made me feel ALL THE SYMPATHY for her whereas if she'd been all heartless I would have found it sliiiightly disconcerting..."She's smart and resilient and one of the strongest, most complex and admirable heroines I've seen in YA" YES! THIS! I think she's my favourite heroine ever.

plot was SO GOOD. Loved learning more about Amity and Candor tho I HATE Amity now. I have to admit, when I first read it I was a *tiny* bit disappointed by the ending. I guessed it half way through and spent the rest of it thinking "surely she wont do that, it's a bit cliche" but now I've come to realise that it was probably the ONLY way it could have ended, so I kinda like it now.

Like you, I both desperately need the 3rd book and yet dread the ending

PERFECT review Brodie, I probs will just post this instead of my own on May 1st XD

  25. Oh, Christ JESUS, Brodie, did you have to write such a brilliant and exasperating review?!? I can't bear it, the pain of this wait, of not knowing WHAT THE HELL IT IS IN YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT in SPECIFIC details. This is agony, I'm knowing it now and in FULL. What have you done to me, dammit?!

I don't know if Tris and Four have many toppers in YA but they never ceased to amaze me in Divergent, and if it gets BETTER than that, than... Gosh, *shakes head* I JUST DON'T KNOW. I'm all anticipating getting to know the remaining factions and I can only IMAGINE the kind of action that goes down. The suspense and the Sexy Times and the action... OH, MY GOODNESS. May 1st please get here soon! Please, please, PLEASE. Better yet, let's hope Amazon decides to ship it sooner!!!!!

  29. The fact that you compare Roth to Rowling........*dies*. It has made me want Insurgent even more than I already did.

Your review is the first I've read and I must bow down to the review goddess that is Brodie! You have wicked review skills!

Four...swoon......that boy.....I am so glad that he gets a large part in this story and anything we get to know about him is welcome. I also love the relationship between he and Tris. Sounds like it is just as amazing, heartbreaking and epic in this one.

HOW, HOW, HOW do they expect us to wait a full year for the last book?! Especially after the amazingness that seems to be Insurgent? I am going to go crazy.

Thank you for your wonderful, awesome and excitement inducing review!

Okay, I'll stop but AHHH!!! It makes me a thousand times more excited for Insurgent now that I know that you read and loved it. And to hear that it's even better than the first book? LET ME HAVE IT! I'm so in love with what you said about Tris and Four...I'm ready to have more of their relationship, please! It sounds wonderful.

Brodie, seriously, that is one hell of a piece of writing. And I loooove it! I'm telling you now, you need to get some sort of job that involves writing, if you don't become an author. I could live off reading your writing! You make me want to write a book just so you can write an incredible review, negative or positive! Ok, I'll stop fangirling over your review-writing proesse.

  38. I finally finished this book last night! My week got busy and it took me all week to read it!!! Well....she did it again.... SHE LEFT US HANGING! Now I can't wait for book 3! I do have to say that this book started slow for me ONLY because it's been over a year since I read Divergent. I didn't realize how much I had forgotten. It took a while for me to catch back up and remember who all the characters were and what had happened. Once I got into the book it was amazing! The action in this book is great. Something is always "happening" however the love story in this book isn't really there. I think part of the reason why I loved Divergent so much was because I was pulling for Tris and Four "who they mostly call Tobias in this book" and I was always waiting to see if they'd give in to their love for each other. In this book their relationship struggles and I don't want to spoil it for anyone...but I never found myself getting wrapped up in their relationship struggles. This book was more about the war between factions and how the factionless fit into it. The ending of this book is a shocker and yet we won't know more till the 3rd book!
